According to the industry on Sunday, Samsung Electronics is planning to
launch 12.2 inch smartpad soon and to start procuring LCD panels from
Samsung Display and Sharp from next month, if early.
Samsung Display and Sharp are going to supply monthly volume of 2 to 2.5 million 12.2 inch panels to Samsung Electronics. Samsung Electronics is known to have set the goal of selling more than 12 million 12.2 inch smartpads per quarter.
The resolution of panel supplied by the two display makers are known to be WQXGA class with 2,560x1,600 pixels, clearer than the full HD displays. Especially, Sharp is going to produce those panels using IGZO, Indum-Gallium Zinc Oxide, panel.
The 12.2 inch smartpad is expected to come with the stylus pen (S-Pen) like its predecessor, Galaxy Note 10.1. The S-Pen is to add greater flexibility in the use of smartpad, not only for the use of UI, but also for the hand-written memo apps.
The development of 12 inch smartpads had been started from the mid last year, but as the 7-inch smartpads gained more popularity, the development had been sidelined for a while. However, the development of larger-sized smartpad was re-started as the smartpads kept on encroaching the notebook PC market.
Samsung seems to have aimed both the notebook PC and smartpad markets with the 12.2 inch smartpad. Since the 12.2 inch smartpads are relatively cheaper than the notebooks and may come with the S-Pen, they can be a very powerful solution for digital textbooks. The digital textbook market has a significant growth potential. According to IDC, a market research firm, the size of U.S. market for educational terminals has grown by 15.3%, YOY. The digital textbook only is a good enough reason for the market to expect the 12 inch smartpads will create a new demand despite the recent boom of smaller-sized smartpads.
Apple also is known to have started its preparation for the introduction of 12 inch iPad, tentatively named as ‘Maxi,’ aiming to launch it next year. If the current market projections materialize, Samsung will launch the 12 inch product before Apple and take on the market first.
