Opera to power KATHREIN TechnoTrend set-top boxes
Opera Software and German set-top-box manufacturer KATHREIN TechnoTrend
today announced that the Opera Devices Software Development Kit (SDK)
will launch on a variety of KATHREIN TechnoTrend set-top box models.
The Opera Devices SDK will be used to render exciting over-the-top services including video-on-demand and Smart TV portals for KATHREIN TechnoTrend, delivering a more interactive experience for viewers. Opera Software brings standards support and superior performance to the rendering of HbbTV services.
An industry-leading toolkit for developing Smart TV solutions for original equipment manufacturers, the Opera Devices SDK takes connected devices including TVs and set-top boxes to the next level, with superior performance on streaming and web-content rendering. The Opera Devices SDK features advanced support for web standards, such as HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, SVG, 2D Canvas and WebGL.
“Today’s viewers are rightly demanding more from their home entertainment,” said Aneesh Rajaram, Senior Vice-President for TV & Devices, Opera Software. “The Opera Devices SDK helps set-top-box and other device manufacturers to bring a more interactive and entertaining experience to their customers, and KATHREIN TechnoTrend users are set to enjoy what they have in store.”
Ralf Exler, CTO of KATHREIN TechnoTrend, explained: “Opera’s leading HTML5 browser gives us great flexibility to provide a variety of new hybrid receiver solutions based on our open API middleware. We are delighted about the commitment and support Opera has shown to accomplish this task in such a swift period.”
The Opera Devices SDK will power all hybrid models of set-top boxes with KATHREIN TechnoTrend’s own middleware solutions, with integration to third-party content-aggregation middleware. These set-top boxes will ship internationally later in 2013.
The new set-top boxes will be previewed at the ANGA COM exhibition and congress on 4-6 June in Cologne, Germany. Stop by Hall 10.2, Booth B19, to see the set-top boxes powered by Opera in action.

Orange Botswana and Opera sign deal to bring Opera Mini to subscribers
Orange in Botswana and Opera Software are set to provide the Opera Mini
web browser to Orange's more than 1 million mobile customers in the
country, giving faster and less expensive web access through cellphones
and tablets.
Like most African countries, most people in Botswana do not have access to fixed-line internet, so a mobile device will be their first, and often only, way to access the internet. Yet, Batswana love the web and their current
favorite mobile sites which are Facebook, Google, YouTube, Yahoo!, Wikipedia, Waptrick, Twitter, Blogger, BBC News, Dictionary.com and Answers.com.
Orange, which is committed to providing web access everywhere in the country, and Opera will provide a co-branded version of Opera Mini. Orange customers will also be able to access a range of Orange portals, with a single click on Opera Mini's Speed Dial, found on the browser home page.
Opera Mini is one of the browsers made by Norwegian company, Opera Software. Opera Mini works on more than 3,000 devices and compresses data by up to 90% before it reaches consumers, giving users a fast and powerful mobile web experience.
The compression ability offered by Opera Mini means we can make far better use of our existing infrastructure while, at the same time, offering a lower cost and far quicker web access to our mobile subscribers," says Lebogang Moruti, Offers and Services Manager for Marketing at Orange Botswana. "We anticipate our launch of the co-branded Opera Mini will be met with high demand by our customers."
"Our offering is strong, particularly on basic phones in Botswana. We have worked hard as a company to provide a very smart mobile web experience even on old handsets," says Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software. "We have already seen strong growth in Botswana over the years, and this new relationship with Orange will see that develop even further."
Orange Botswana is the second Orange operation in Africa to have chosen Opera Mini, and follows Orange Ivory Coast.

Give your phone a fresh start in the New Year
The New Year is here, and this is the perfect opportunity for a new
start in 2013. As well as goals like exercising more often or saving
money, it might also be a good time to get rid of all the clutter in
your life — including digital clutter.
If you use your phone for just about everything, chances are it needs a cleanup. From unused apps to files you downloaded once from the internet, extra mobile clutter can make your phone sluggish or simply make it difficult for you to find what you are looking for. Follow these easy tips from Opera Software — makers of the Opera web browsers for phones, computers and other connected devices — to give your phone a fresh start in the New Year.
Back up your data. Running out of space in your phone to save your pictures, music and more? Upload them to the cloud or simply copy everything to an external hard drive. That way, your data will also be safely stored elsewhere in case something happens to your phone. Try SugarSync, a file syncing service that will sync your new photos and other files to the cloud automatically.
Give unused apps the flick. If you have not used an app in the last few months, it’s not likely you will use it again. Instead, the icon sits there taking up space and making it harder to find the apps you do use. Go through all your apps and see which ones you use on a daily basis — delete the rest.
Get a smart browser. The Opera Mini app shrinks data to as little as 10% of its original size before it lands on your phone. This speeds up the web on your phone, saving you a great deal of time — since you’ll be able to open websites in the blink of an eye — as well as money and battery.
Delete cache files. Your apps and browser create temporary files that can take up space and memory. You can download an app to help you do the job, such as Easy Cache Cleaner, which scans your phone and allows you to clear out the cache files. Once you’re done, you might as well delete the app.
Clean up your message inbox. You’ll gain space, and you are never going to read them again anyway. It only takes a few seconds to delete them all — you can even use an app like Delete Old Messages to help you — and you’ll feel refreshed after you do it. Remember: New Year, new start.
Remember that name? If you cannot figure out who that person in your contacts is or where you know them from, ditch them. Also, check for duplicates on your address book, as syncing from different sources can cause double-ups. It’s all about the space.
Save power. If your phone drains battery, there are a few steps you can take. Close the apps you’re not using, turn the mobile data, 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off when you don’t need them, lower the brightness on your screen and turn the keyboard clicks off.
With these tips you will get your phone properly spruced up for the New Year. Even if it’s working fine, following these steps will keep things from piling up on your phone, giving you more free space to use when you need it and making it easier to find what you’re looking for.

Put your PC on a New Year’s diet
Many people are currently making resolutions to slim down in 2013, but
have you considered also putting your computer on a well-deserved New
Year's diet? A slow, bloated computer can lead to frustration and less
time doing the things you love - definitely a problem if you've resolved
to stress less and spend more time on hobbies and with loved ones in
the New Year.
Here are 10 quick tips to whip your computer back into shape:
Tidy up your desktop.
A computer desktop screen full of files is messy and makes things difficult to find. Create a new folder for the files and folders on the desktop that you don't frequently access. This will clear off your desktop, while keeping the files handy until you have time to sort through them.
Move big files to an external hard drive.
It’s like giving those extra holiday kilograms to a friend, but without having to deal with any hurt feelings. A hard drive is also a great way to back up your most important files.
Clean up your multimedia.
Remember those movies you loved so much that you saved the files so you could watch them again? And … have you? If the answer is “No,” into the trashcan can they go!
Give your browser a boost.
With the Opera web browser compression technology, Opera Turbo, you can load webpages up to five times faster than with other browsers. If you are stuck on a sluggish connection, get crowded out in a busy Wi-Fi area, rely on 3G cards or use a laptop connected to your phone, activate turbo mode to keep your browsing zooming.
Declutter your email.
If you don’t keep junk in your house, don’t hoard it in your inbox either. Start with your oldest messages, which are usually the least relevant now, and get deleting. Also, try searching the inbox for sources from which you regularly receive newsletters that are now outdated.
Defragment your disk.
Disk fragmentation is one of the most common reasons for slow performance on a computer. In Windows, click the Start button and go to All Programs > Accessories > System Tools on older versions of Windows. In Windows 8, open the Search, enter Defragment, and go to Settings > Defragment and optimize your drives.
Remove autostart programs.
To make programs start only when you want, use the Start Menu in Windows Vista and Windows 7 to type “msconfig”. Open the msconfig.exe program link, where you can deselect autostart programs. In Windows 8, click Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager, select the Startup tab and disable any item you don’t want to launch automatically. Mac users can go to System Preferences > Users & Groups/Accounts > Login Items to deselect programs.
Run a virus/malware scan.
If you are an Opera user, add the WOT (Web of Trust) and Ghostery extensions. WOT uses a traffic-light system to rate the trustworthiness of the websites you visit, and Ghostery detects tracking and web bugs. Also, consider buying antivirus software and scanning your computer for malware.
Clear out the temp files on your computer.
In your computer’s Download or Temp Files folders, delete the files you no longer need. You can also remove all the temporary files in your browser. In Opera, just select Delete Private Data (the second option under "Tools"), and it will show you what needs to go, including cookies, browsing history or the entire cache. Consider keeping your tabs and passwords, to let you browse faster.
Physically clean your computer.
Use the right cleaners and get it looking like new again. If you have had your computer more than few months, it’s also time to clean the inside of your machine. Open it and use a can of compressed air to dust the interior parts carefully, especially the fan and heat sink over the processor. Remember not to touch any interior parts.
“These few, simple ideas will get your PC back into shape, so you can start 2013 more efficiently,” says Tiago Pregueiro Jeronimo, Product Manager for Desktop Products, Opera Software. “Once it feels like new, you can start setting your personal resolutions and spend more time on the things you really love. With a slimmed-down PC, it’ll be much easier to tackle the new year.”

Getting savvy about web browsing with Opera Software’s Surf Safe program
Opera Software has been working to increase understanding about the
importance of healthy internet-browsing habits among young adults. In
India, the leading web-browser company has joined hands with the
Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), to spread student
awareness on how to “Surf Safe”, through a series of seminars.
The program educates young people on techniques that will help them have a safe and productive web-surfing experience. Although focused on India, these basic tips are relevant to websurfers both young and old across the globe.
The focus for “Surf Safe” is netiquette (the unofficial rules guiding conduct on the internet) and the importance of staying security conscious online. It covers everything from the very basics of thinking twice before posting anything on social networks, to being careful with personal and confidential data shared through email and other modes of communication.
The following are examples of how young people can surf in both a polite and secure manner:
Be respectful — treat online communication the same way as you would treat face-to-face conversations.
What is illegal offline is illegal online.
Don’t spam others; avoid forwarding junk email.
No one is anonymous on the internet. Everything you post can be traced back to you.
Don’t click on anonymous messages and attachments you get in your email.
Configure privacy settings on social networks (don’t rely on the default settings); your personal information is most vulnerable here.
Learn more about your browser and its safety features.
Keep your passwords safe and to yourself; never share them with anyone.
Your password should be at least eight characters long and made up of letters, numbers and special characters.
Always go through the settings and options carefully before downloading any application on PCs and mobiles.
“Opera Software wants all of its users to have the best possible experience online,” says Sunil Kamath, Vice President for South Asia, Opera Software. “As part of our commitment to enabling a safer online experience, we strongly feel that education is the key to internet safety. These days, everyone has to be more vigilant than ever when it comes to safety, malware, phishing, credit-card fraud, identity theft and other cyber threats.”
“The objective of this campaign is to apprise college-going youths on how to use the internet safely and productively, and keep away from those prowling the internet with negative intentions. The internet is a fantastic medium to communicate and gain knowledge, but we should maintain sensible habits while we are using it,” says Rakshit Tandon, Consultant, IAMAI.

New loader in Opera Mini for BlackBerry and J2ME
Norwegian company Opera Software ASA today announced a new version of Opera Mini 7.1 for J2ME and BlackBerry devices, which, in her words, has a new, redesigned download manager, opening new opportunities to work with uploaded files to the phone, whether it be documents, music, videos, and any other data.
It's no secret that mobile phones connect to the network is not always stable. Many probably know that feeling when downloading a file size of 10 MB is stopped at around 9.99 MB, when the subway car enters a tunnel and the network is lost to the next stop. In Opera Mini 7.1 download under such circumstances would be suspended and resumed automatically when the user is in range of a network.
The developers also claim that the processing of downloaded files has become much easier than before. On the BlackBerry platform provides access to files from within the browser, and the owners of devices based on J2ME can choose - to open the file in a media player installed on the phone or in the phone memory.

Smoother downloading with Opera Mini for J2ME and BlackBerry
Today, the internet became just a tad easier for the millions of people
using basic phones to browse the web. Downloading handling on basic
phones has been a cumbersome task, but with Opera Mini 7.1 for J2ME and
BlackBerry, this is now easier — and faster — than ever.
The Opera Mini 7.1 browser features a new, revamped download manager that lets the user easily handle downloaded media such as documents, multimedia and other content. Many mobile users know that internet connections can be fickle at times. Sometimes it may feel like the universe is trying tell you something when the 10 MB presentation from your boss stops downloading at 9.99 MB after your train enters a tunnel, and lose the mobile signal for a few seconds.
With the Opera Mini 7.1 browser, downloading of a file can be paused when the connection disappears, and then resumed when you’re back on track.
The new Opera Mini 7.1 lets you access the file even more easily than before. On the BlackBerry platform, the file can be accessed directly from the browser; while, on J2ME the user can choose to let the phone open the file directly in e.g. a media player or to save it for later use.
Opera Mini works on more than 3,000 different phone models, in all price categories. Thanks to its compression technology, Opera Mini can save you time and data cost, by up to 90%. Opera Mini can be downloaded from m.opera.com.

DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (“DiGi”) continues to drive higher mobile internet penetration with the unveiling of the new DiGiLive Web Pass, a new mobile internet offering accessed via the Opera Mini browser and the Facebook USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) service.

Customers can choose from four different packages — 1-Day Internet, 1-Hour Internet, 1-Day Facebook and 1-Hour Facebook — depending on their browsing needs.
The DiGi Facebook USSD is an interactive service that allows non-smartphone owners to access Facebook from their mobile phones without requiring any data or internet connection. This latest service was made available on October 16, 2012.

“Our primary strategy has been to ensure customers have a positive and good mobile internet experience regardless of which mobile platform or mobile phone they are using. Customers now have more affordable options to choose from with the introduction of our latest service offerings. Response has been very encouraging since the soft launches of both services, and we are confident that we are on the right track to encourage more people to embrace the convenience these services have to offer.”
Lars Boilesen, CEO for Opera Software, adds, “We are happy with the rate at which our user base is growing in Malaysia through DiGi, which has grown to more than 200%, since we first announced our collaboration last year. DiGi’s ongoing efforts to develop relevant content for its customers to browse through Opera Mini are commendable, and we look forward to building on our relationship to create an even better mobile surfing experience.”
DiGiLive Web Pass empowers DiGi customers to have better financial control over internet charges when accessing Facebook via the Opera Mini browser. The packages can be subscribed to for as low as RM0.50 for 1 Hour Facebook and RM1.00 for 1 Day Facebook.
Opera Web Pass is here
Today, Opera Software announces a new, innovative and clever way for mobile operators to offer their subscribers access to the web as a “one-click experience”.
The Opera Web Pass allows operators, in a flexible and cost-efficient way, to package time- or site-specific data offerings to their users. This makes it even more compelling for subscribers to get online using their mobile phones and in a way that is tailored to their needs. For mobile subscribers without data plans, this is the easiest and most flexible solution for accessing the web. If you have a couple of hours to spend on a train, get a couple of hours of web for the trip.
Opera Software has always been about providing the best web experience to as many people as possible, and, with today’s launch of the Opera Web Pass, the web should soon be accessible to even more people — when and where they need it. With the opportunity to choose exactly the time you would like to access the web, rather than the amount of megabytes, the offering becomes more tangible and easy to understand, something both operators and their subscribers will appreciate.
“We see this as a great way of lowering the bar for millions of users who are taking their first steps out to the mobile web. We are excited about working with our operator partners and making the web even more accessible and tailored to the needs of a growing mobile internet community,” says Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software.
In Malaysia, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (“DiGi”) has become the first mobile operator to offer the Opera Web Pass as the product was jointly developed and tested by Opera and DiGi. “Through regular conversations with DiGi customers to better understand their needs, we are able to create service offerings that tailor to certain market segments. Providing a flexible and cost-efficient way for DiGi customers to access the internet on the move makes good business sense, as there are millions of mobile subscribers in Malaysia who are not looking to be constantly online, but who wish to stay connected at an extremely affordable rate. Opera’s latest product offering meets this growing need, and we are happy to play a pivotal role in jointly developing the product with them,” says Albern Murty, CMO of DiGi.
“Opera Software has over 100 operator partners around the world and over 200 million users of our mobile products every month. The Opera Web Pass is in the sweet spot between the operator and the end user. Making the web smooth and simple, that is what Opera is all about,” adds Lars Boilesen.
