As the Official Mobile Computing Partner, BlackBerry and MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS have been working closely together to develop the team's use of the BlackBerry 10 platform at the team's headquarters and at each Grand Prix.

Ross Brawn, Team Principal at the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team commented: "It's all set to be another exciting race weekend in Montreal and we are delighted to have BlackBerry on-board. We're embracing the new BlackBerry 10 platform at both a technical and operational level, as well as collaborating with the team at BlackBerry to bring new mobile innovation to MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS."

It is a natural fit for BlackBerry to partner with the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team to deliver value through technical and marketing collaboration. We have built BlackBerry 10 to keep people moving, and we believe the essence of this will be delivered at many levels through our partnership."

To Sell Its New Z10 Phone, BlackBerry Bets Big On Real-Time Takeovers

When you’re betting the house, you don’t skimp on the marketing. That’s the approach BlackBerry has taken with its BlackBerry 10 operating system and its line of smartphones anchored on the Z10, which hit stores in the U.S. Friday. With great pressure to turn the company’s fortunes around, the company’s looked to innovative marketing to get its phone’s new features out there—and is betting big on tactics chief marketing officer Frank Boulben describes as “real-time marketing.”

BlackBerry will be there as millions of Americans tune in to March Madness—likely costing hundreds of millions of dollars in productivity—as the company will continue to air its “Keep Moving” television commercials; Boulben says commercials from carriers will hit TVs in the next couple of weeks.

But to pull off what Boulben has previously told FORBES is “the greatest comeback in tech history,” you need a lot more than a slick television spot. Since taking on that challenge in June, Boulben and his team have worked with agency BBDO and several digital agencies from within Publicis group like Razorfish on a more aggressive strategy, with tens of millions pumped into the campaign, which is built largely around several versions of a tactic known as the “takeover.”

How a mobile takeover ad of the Time Shift feature for the BlackBerry Z10 looks, from its U.K. campaign. (Image credit: BlackBerry)

These takeovers, piloted in the United Kingdom, will hit U.S. customers soon on computers and their non-Blackberry devices. BlackBerry built out two digital takeovers for desktop, first with The Guardian in the United Kingdom and now with the New York Times. “I think these are a world first,” Boulben says. Those takeovers fill your browser with ad that “takes over” your display, in this case designed to resemble the Hub feature that helps users organize their content on the new BlackBerry 10 devices. Users who see the New York Times takeover, for example, will see the takeover pull in content from the different verticals on the Times’ site feeds, its Facebook page and official tweets.

Android and iPhone users—and chances you are one, given those companies’ combined 85% market share—will also experience BlackBerry’s ad content in the form of mobile takeovers starting the week of March 25. Those mobile takeovers will fill your screen with what looks like a BlackBerry 10′s, demoing a specific feature like its photo “Time Shift” capability that allows you to scroll through several captured options for each face in a picture.

BlackBerry knows that it’s not enough simply to resell devices to its remaining brand die-hards; with 5.9% market share there are too few left for that to sustain the company formerly known as RIM.  Boulben is bullish about the BlackBerry 10’s competitiveness in regaining customers who left the brand. “The device is productivity oriented, but at the same time it’s a cool one because of some edgy features like Time Shift,” he says.

Before consumers can even weigh in on their taste for those features, Boulben faces the challenge of getting them in front of users who don’t associate BlackBerry with innovation. The marketer points to early results for the phone in the United Kingdom as a positive sign for the company’s odds to do so in the U.S.: users experiencing the mobile takeover there spend an average of 4.2 minutes engaging it, a long time for a piece of marketing content on mobile. BlackBerry says that of its strong sales in the U.K. since launching there at the end of January, one out of three buyers previously owned a non-BlackBerry device.

Boulben is gunning for iPhone and Android users in the U.S., too. “I expect [buyers coming from other platforms] to be a substantial minority of sales in every market and I don’t see why the U.S. would be any different,” Boulben says.

BlackBerry wants you to realize your iPhone thumbs can't keep up. (Image credit: BlackBerry)

One more tactic that BlackBerry hopes will get those users considering BlackBerry will be a keyboard challenge launching later this quarter. The challenge will encourage smartphone users to scan QR codes on digital banner ads and in print to upload the game, which pits you against the Z10 in a typing challenge. (Hint: BlackBerry’s paying for that on the bet that you’ll lose, badly.)

In its uphill battle to regain consumer perception as a major player, Boulben says a strong social media fan base will give the brand a boost: according to the CMO, the brand has a combined 30 million fans  on social networks and 18 million subscribed and reachable through email and other consumer relationship management (CRM) pushes. The company also offers a personalized demo on its flagship website that, with a user’s permission, pulls socially-shared data like music and Facebook contacts to give you a unique walk-through of BlackBerry 10 features.

For BlackBerry, there’s no safety net if these new marketing strategies fall on deaf ears and BlackBerry 10 can’t keep its share in the market and start ticking the needle back upward. Boulben’s confident his campaign will give the company its best shot at a positive takeover.

Here Are Leaked Photos Of The Next BlackBerry Phone For Verizon And AT&T

We just got our hands on two images of RIM's upcoming BlackBerry phone, the BlackBerry Z10.
The source who provided the images says he's been testing two variants of the phone recently –– one on Verizon and one on AT&T. In one of the photos, you can see Verizon's branding on the front cover of the phone.
RIM will formally unveil the Z10 and the new BlackBerry 10 operating system at a big press event on January 30.
Here are some initial impressions of the BlackBerry Z10 and BB10 from our source:
  • The build quality is really nice. The back cover feels rubbery and snaps on sort of like the back cover on Samsung's Galaxy S III.
  • The screen looks great.
  • The web browser is very quick, just as fast as a desktop browser. It also supports Flash.
  • You can set up separate profiles for work and personal use. This is good for people who want to use one phone for business and play.
  • It integrates with Evernote.
  • The new AppWorld store looks a lot like the Google Play store for Android apps.
  • It only takes one minute to boot up.
Here are the photos. Our source included an iPhone 4S in between the two BlackBerrys to help you compare sizes.

For every 100 web pageviews on an iPad, a Kindle gets 5, a Galaxy gets 3, and a Surface gets 0.22

Non-iPad web traffic is growing, but it’s still a tiny fraction of what Apple’s iconic tablet pulls in.
Advertising and analytics company Chitika released its December 2012 tablet market update, and the numbers aren’t great for any tablet that doesn’t start with the letter I.
“For every 100 iPad impressions, other tablets have 14.75,” Gabe Donnini, Chitika’s data solutions engineer, said today. “Eighty-seven percent of the tablet web traffic in North America is generated by iPad.”
The biggest chunk of that non-iPad traffic comes from the Kindle, with 4.88 pageviews for every 100 on the iPad. Kindle did grow a very healthy 20 percent month-over-month, however, compared to Chitika’s November statistics. These 4.88 pageviews translate into a 4.25 percent share of all tablet web traffic.
After Kindle, Samsung’s Galaxy has 3.04 pageviews to every hundred on an iPad. Google’s Nexus clocks in at 1.22 pageviews for every 100 on an iPad, and the Nook and Playbook are both under one. All Android tablets together have only  about nine web pageviews to every hundred on an iPad, if you don’t include the Kindle, or 14 if you do. And the Microsoft Surface, which was of course just released earlier this year, has only .22 pageviews for every hundred on an iPad.

This is not an impressive performance in a tablet market that is now almost three years old, based on when the first iPad was released.
Of course, the big question is: Will this change after the holidays? In other words, was it an iPad Christmas, or did more millions unwrap Android tabs this holiday?
“We’re in the process of generating a new report right now to compare pre-holiday and post-holiday traffic,” Donnini said. “We want to see who won the battle for market share … and see what people got on Christmas.”
That report will be coming out shortly, and we’ll have those details on VentureBeat.

Tablet Market Update: December 2012

This holiday season has a high likelihood of being the biggest ever when it comes to tablet sales, as multiple manufacturers have unveiled highly publicized new devices over the past few months. To provide a view of the current market environment, Chitika Insights conducted a study focusing on tablet usage in North America.
To quantify this latest report, Chitika Insights examined a sample of tens of millions of tablet impressions from the Chitika Ad network. This study was drawn from a date range of December 8th to December 14th 2012, and only includes traffic from the U.S. and Canada.
As seen in the above graph, users of the Kindle Fire family of tablets constituted 4.88 impressions per 100 iPad impressions in December – a 4.25% share of all tablet Web traffic as a whole. This is an increase of nearly 20% from Kindle Fire’s 3.57% share observed in our last Tablet market update.
The Samsung Galaxy family of tablets also experienced a usage share increase, albeit less impressive than the Kindle Fire, growing from 2.36% to a 2.65% share of all domestic tablet traffic.
The Google Nexus family of tablets continued to see usage growth, with its share rising from 0.91% in November to 1.06% in December – an increase of more than 15%.
Despite these gains by some of the bigger players in the tablet marketplace, there has been a negligible impact to Apple’s dominant usage share. Users of Apple’s tablets still generate over 87% of U.S. and Canadian tablet Web traffic, coming down from just over 88% one month ago.
We’ll be revisiting the evolution of tablet market shortly, as the new influx of activated tablets from the Christmas holiday begin to impact usage figures.
