Moto X: The First Smartphone Assembled in the USA

There are more than 130 million smartphones in use in the USA today and not one of them was assembled here...until now.

Today at the AllThingsD conference Dennis Woodside revealed how we are reinventing Motorola through a portfolio of products starting with Moto X, a new flagship smartphone that will be designed, engineered and assembled in the USA. We’re not talking about just a handful of units either -- available this summer, every Moto X sold in the USA will be assembled in Fort Worth, Texas, making it the first smartphone ever assembled domestically.

There were a few reasons why we decided to do this. There are several business advantages to having our Illinois and California-based designers and engineers much closer to our factory. For instance, we’ll be able to iterate on design much faster, create a leaner supply chain, respond much more quickly to purchasing trends and demands, and deliver devices to people here much more quickly. And as a part of Google we’re being encouraged to take big bets on things that make a difference.

We still have a network of global operations, and that won’t change. Our global manufacturing partner remains Flextronics and we’ll continue to assemble devices locally in China and Brazil. Samsung, Android Remain On Top In U.S. Mobile, Apple Supplants LG As No.2 With 53% Smartphone Penetration: comScore

By one account Apple is having a very strong quarter in the U.S. in smartphone sales on the strength of the iPhone 5, but overall, Android and specifically Samsung are continuing to dominate the market. According to figures out today from comScore, there are 123.3 million people in the U.S. using smartphones as of November 2012, and Android represents 53.7 of them. Among all mobile users — smartphone and otherwise — 26.9% of them are using Samsung devices.

The figures, the result of a survey of some 30,000 consumers as part of comScores ongoing MobiLens research, found that Apple’s iPhones account for 35% of all smartphone subscribers, and that its overall mobile share is now at 26.9%. That was enough to put Apple ahead of LG as the country’s number-two mobile brand, with LG now at 17.5%, and Motorola and HTC continuing to round out the top-five, but with smaller market shares than three months before.

The survey, of course, does not include holiday shopping figures, so it will be interesting to see whether Apple inches closer to Samsung, or even surpasses it, as a result of that period. According to figures from Kantar Worldpanel, Apple’s iPhone, in the 12 weeks that ended November 25, reached its highest-ever sales share in the U.S. market at 53.3%.

comScore also found that the percentage of mobile consumers using smartphones continues to climb. They now stand at 53%, and just as before the rankings continue to demonstrate that it’s an Android/iOS game: RIM, Microsoft and Symbian all lost market share.

But despite the ongoing move to smartphones, people are still using their devices for low-tech activities.  Texting remains the most popular form of “mobile content usage” according to comScore, with 75.9% of all consumers saying that they have used their phones for this purpose, and it’s still growing.

App usage is in second position, with 54.2% of consumers noting that they use apps. That grew by 0.8 percentage points, and while at one point web browsing was more popular, it shows that apps are continuing to pull away from mobile browser usage, which grew by only 0.1 percentage points over last quarter. In all, 52.1% of users noting that they used their mobile web browsers.

Among more specific content activities (as opposed to generic “app usage” or “mobile web browsing,” social networking, gaming, and music remained the top-three most popular categories, with gaming the only one among them to lose some popularity.

comScore Reports November 2012 U.S. Mobile Subscriber Market Share

Samsung and Apple Continue to Seize Share in OEM Market

comScore, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today released data from the comScore MobiLens service, reporting key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending November 2012. The study surveyed more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers and found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer overall with 26.9 percent market share. Google Android continued to lead among smartphone platforms, accounting for 53.7 percent of smartphone subscribers, while Apple secured 35 percent.

OEM Market Share

For the three-month average period ending in November, device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 26.9 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers (up 1.2 percentage points). Apple ranked second with 18.5 percent market share (up 1.4 percentage points), followed by LG with 17.5 percent share, Motorola with 10.4 percent and HTC with 5.9 percent.

123.3 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones (53 percent mobile market penetration) during the three months ending in November, up 6 percent since August. Google Android ranked as the top smartphone platform with 53.7 percent market share (up 1.1 percentage points), while Apple’s share increased 0.7 percentage points to 35 percent. RIM ranked third with 7.3 percent share, followed by Microsoft (3 percent) and Symbian (0.5 percent).

In November, 75.9 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device (up 0.3 percentage points). Downloaded applications were used by 54.2 percent of subscribers (up 0.8 percentage points), while browsers were used by 52.1 percent (up 0.1 percentage points). Accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased 0.9 percentage points to 39.2 percent of mobile subscribers. Game-playing was done by 33.7 percent of the mobile audience, while 28.7 percent listened to music on their phones (up 0.4 percentage points).

Tablet Market Update: December 2012

This holiday season has a high likelihood of being the biggest ever when it comes to tablet sales, as multiple manufacturers have unveiled highly publicized new devices over the past few months. To provide a view of the current market environment, Chitika Insights conducted a study focusing on tablet usage in North America.

To quantify this latest report, Chitika Insights examined a sample of tens of millions of tablet impressions from the Chitika Ad network. This study was drawn from a date range of December 8th to December 14th 2012, and only includes traffic from the U.S. and Canada.

As seen in the above graph, users of the Kindle Fire family of tablets constituted 4.88 impressions per 100 iPad impressions in December – a 4.25% share of all tablet Web traffic as a whole. This is an increase of nearly 20% from Kindle Fire’s 3.57% share observed in our last Tablet market update.

The Samsung Galaxy family of tablets also experienced a usage share increase, albeit less impressive than the Kindle Fire, growing from 2.36% to a 2.65% share of all domestic tablet traffic.

The Google Nexus family of tablets continued to see usage growth, with its share rising from 0.91% in November to 1.06% in December – an increase of more than 15%.

Despite these gains by some of the bigger players in the tablet marketplace, there has been a negligible impact to Apple’s dominant usage share. Users of Apple’s tablets still generate over 87% of U.S. and Canadian tablet Web traffic, coming down from just over 88% one month ago.

We’ll be revisiting the evolution of tablet market shortly, as the new influx of activated tablets from the Christmas holiday begin to impact usage figures.

Google Designing 'X Phone' to Rival Apple, Samsung

Engineers at Motorola MSI -0.53% are hard at work on a sophisticated handset—known internally as the "X phone"—but the Google Inc. GOOG -0.93% unit is running into some obstacles in its effort to provide more potent competition for Apple Inc., AAPL -0.46% said people familiar with the matter.

Seven months after being acquired by Google for $12.5 billion, Motorola is designing its marquee handset with cutting-edge features to stand apart from existing phones when it is released next year, these people said.

But while Google is known for swift execution on the Web, its new hardware unit has run into hurdles associated with manufacturing and supply-chain management that have caused the company to rethink some initial plans for the X phone, such as using a bendable screen, these people added.

The previously undisclosed development effort is a key facet of Google's strategy for boosting the minuscule market position of the cellphone pioneer, based partly on bolstering quality while reducing the quantity of Motorola products.

Motorola is primarily working on two fronts: devices that will be sold by carrier partner Verizon Wireless, such as the "Droid" line of smartphones, and the X phone, these people said. Motorola is also expected to work on an "X" tablet after the phone, the people added.

Meanwhile, Google must manage complex relationships with smartphone makers that use its Android mobile-device software—particularly with Samsung Electronics Co., 005930.SE -4.06% a Motorola rival that has become the No. 1 smartphone maker with Google's help.

Dennis Woodside, a former Google top sales executive who is now Motorola's chief executive, declined to discuss products under development. But he said in an interview that the company is "investing in a team and a technology that will do something quite different than the current approaches."

He said while Motorola has "fallen under hard times," it "now has the support of a shareholder in Google that has resources to do big things." He added that only one billion of the world's seven billion people use smartphones, calling that "an incredible opportunity."

For the X phone, an initiative being led by former Google product manager Lior Ron who worked on the Google Maps team, Motorola wanted top-notch features for the phone's camera and photo software, such as better color saturation and the ability to take panoramic shots, two people familiar with the situation said.

But some of the features were found to drain battery life or already have been incorporated into popular new devices, such as the iPhone 5 that launched earlier this year, they added.

Motorola also ran into difficulties when it looked into using a bendable screen and materials such as ceramics that would allow the company to make the X Phone more stress resistant, use more colors and mold into different shapes, these people said.

One person familiar with the plans said Motorola plans to enhance the X Phone with its recent acquisition of Viewdle, an imaging and gesture-recognition software developer. This person said obstacles are a "normal" part of the research-and-development process. Despite the challenges, the new handset is due out sometime next year.

Motorola, which accounted for less than 3% of Android phone shipments in the third quarter, according to market research firm IDC, has moved to improve its deteriorating financial position.

Google has cut 4,000 Motorola workers, or 20% of its staff. This week, Motorola agreed to sell its TV set-top box division to cable equipment maker Arris Group Inc. ARRS +1.79% in a deal valued at about $2.35 billion.

Google's purchase of Motorola was a controversial move, partly aimed at acquiring patents to use against rivals that might sue the Internet company. The company has since talked up the benefits of making its own devices, even though Motorola's market share had dwindled.

The deal complicates Google's mission to advance Android. Hardware makers typically install a version of the operating system that comes attached with Google's revenue-generating services such as Google Search, Google Maps and Chrome browser.

Samsung, with its popular "Galaxy" devices, is the biggest such partner and is quickly gaining market share. The South Korean company shipped 40.3% of all Android-based phones in the third quarter, according to IDC. Google has co-developed devices with Samsung and provided it early access to new versions of Android software.

Some Google executives have expressed fears the relationship could go sour if Samsung decided to use a "forked" version of Android, according to four people familiar with the matter. That means Samsung would create devices based on a version of Android that doesn't come with Google apps preinstalled.

Motorola is seen as a kind of insurance policy if Samsung shifts strategy, these people said, even though there is little evidence so far of such a move. Google could begin adopting an integrated approach of having its Motorola and Android units work more closely together, like Apple does with its hardware and software teams, they said.

A Samsung spokesman declined to comment.

Motorola's Mr. Woodside said "I don't necessarily agree" that his unit is a hedge in case Google-Samsung relations go south. He added that Motorola is "operating independently" from Google because it wants to "preserve the success of Android."

Google Chief Executive Larry Page has told the Motorola team to "think big" and aspire to reach the scale of Samsung's mobile business, and promised a significant marketing budget for the unit, said people familiar with the matter.

But Mr. Page so far hasn't pushed Google's Android unit to aid Motorola by giving it early access to the most updated versions of Android software, as it has with Samsung, in order to avoid the appearance that Motorola is receiving preferential treatment, these people said.

Google has filled Motorola's top ranks with several dozen Google executives and product managers, many of whom didn't have previous experience with hardware, said people familiar with the matter. Google sees that relative inexperience as an advantage if it wants to revolutionize smartphone design, these people said.

The company says it will stop making devices for dozens of countries in order to focus on the biggest markets. Mobile-industry experts said that will have the effect of reducing Motorola's scale—and thus its leverage when negotiating over price with suppliers.

Motorola's Mr. Woodside said "scale is important but building great products is even more important."

Pieter Knook, a former executive at wireless carrier Vodafone Group VOD.LN -0.13% PLC, said, "If you look at the handset makers other than Apple, it's a pretty grim story for anybody who's not Samsung" or Chinese companies building lower-priced smartphones.

White Motorola RAZR i coming to the UK on December 22

The Motorola RAZR i was first released in the UK back in early-October, and well, it looks like there will soon be a second model available. This latest is white and it will be available sooner rather than later. The one catch, at the moment it looks like it will only be available with one retailer.

That retailer is Phones 4u and the handset will be available beginning on December 22. According to what we have seen in the press release announcement, Phones 4u will be the “first” to offer the handset in the UK. We only mention first, because as opposed to exclusive, it appears as if the handset will eventually make its way to other retailers.

As far as Phones 4u goes, they will have the handset available for free on pay monthly plans from £20.50 and up. Otherwise, the “i” in the RAZR i name gives the clue to towards the processor — an Intel processor. More specifically, the RAZR i is sporting a single-core 2.0GHz Intel processor.

Aside from the Intel inside, the RAZR i has a 4.3-inch (960 x 540) edge-to-edge display with Gorilla Glass, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, 2,000 mAh battery, VGA quality front-facing camera, an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera and a Kevlar fiber coating on the backside.

Google sold its Motorola Home

Google and ARRIS Group announced that RRIS and Motorola Mobility - a subsidiary of Google, signed a definitive agreement whereby ARRIS will acquire Motorola Home business from Motorola Mobility for $ 2.35 billion in cash and stock.

The transaction was approved by the Board of Directors of both companies. Under the agreement, after the closing of the transaction, Google will receive $ 2.05 billion in cash and approximately $ 300 million in shares of the new issue ARRIS, subject to certain adjustments as provided in the agreement, representing approximately 15.7% of the shares in ARRIS after adjusting and closing accounts.

The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2013, according to the usual conditions for reconciliation and closure.

...to a new Motorola Android smartphone!

As part of our commitment to deliver the best of smartphone technology, we plan to roll out Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to a number of our devices first offered in 2011 or later.* Though we are working hard to deliver that upgrade, not all of our devices will receive it. In the United States, we have created a program for owners of qualifying devices that will not receive Jelly Bean. We are offering a $100 rebate** when those eligible trade up to a new Motorola smartphone. Device eligibility is listed below.
