HTC One May Have Sold Almost 2 Million Units so Far, According to Analysts

Citigroup Global Markets Inc analyst Kevin Chang said in a note published this week that he expects the HTC One to have sold about 1.2 million units in May. He also said that this means a 100% increase compared to April.

This would bring the total amount of units sold to about 1.8 million and if you take the 1.2 million units from last month and you divide them by 4, you get about 300k units per week. This means that if the momentum is the same, right now at the end of the first week of June we could be at 2 million units sold.

In the meantime, Samsung announced two weeks ago that they’ve reached the 10 million units threshold with the Galaxy S4. It took them a month to reach that performance and I have to also mention that HTC One’s figures are surpassing the predictions of analysts. HTC component sourcing strategy has been the source of concern for investors and analyst, but things seem to have settled now.

HTC’s sales likely to flatten: Citigroup

SUSTAINABILITY:Citigroup and Morgan Stanley Taiwan have voiced concern that the smartphone vendor’s reliance on developed markets could hurt it in the long run

Smartphone vendor HTC Corp (宏達電) is likely to see flat sales growth this month, after sales last month climbed to their highest level in 11 months, Citigroup said.
“We expect HTC shipments to peak in May, stay at a similar level in June and start to decline in July,” Citigroup Global Markets Inc analyst Kevin Chang (張凱偉) said in a note on Wednesday.
Chang’s forecast came after HTC on Tuesday reported its consolidated revenue for last month increased to NT$29 billion (US$969.4 million), up 48.03 percent from April, thanks to better-than-expected sales of its flagship HTC One smartphone.
“We estimate that HTC One accounted for around half of HTC’s May sales,” Chang said, adding that the company might have shipped around 1.2 million units of the phone last month, up 100 percent from April.
REVISION
Citigroup originally forecast HTC wouldship only 1 million HTC Ones last month before ramping it up further this month.
Chang said he revised his shipment forecast upward because HTC’s component yield rate had improved faster than expected, which in turn had enabled it to push some shipments to last month from this month.
However, “with One volume peaking and other models still weak, we believe May will be the peak of near-term sales,” he said in the note.
HTC may experience a similar scenario as last year, when sales also peaked in May and June, he added.
The Taoyuan-based company could also face headwinds from the generally slow market demand in the high-end smartphone segment, according to Citigroup.
Chang attributed the slow demand to a combination of saturation in developed markets and demand being delayed to next year as consumers wait for the launch of the big-screen iPhone.
EXPLANATIONS
“This is probably why iPhone shipments are still stable at around 30 million units per quarter despite the poor consumer feedback on iPhone 5 for its small screen,” Chang said. “We suspect this could be the reason HTC One is not doing particularly well despite other brands not doing so well either.”
Citigroup maintained a “sell” rating on HTC shares and a NT$205 target price. HTC shares fell 1.4 percent to NT$285 yesterday.
In a separate note on Tuesday, Morgan Stanley Taiwan Ltd said that HTC needs to conquer its structural issues to win more ground in the competitive smartphone market, despite the success of the HTC One.
It said that HTC’s sales upsurge last month was probably the result of wider distribution and improved component supply.
The market has already anticipated the robust sales, and HTC’s risks now lie in the sustainability of its sales into the third quarter, the brokerage said.
“While new HTC One feedback has been constructive, we are mindful of a few structural issues,” Morgan Stanley’s equity analyst Jasmine Lu (呂智穎) wrote.
First, HTC is not well-positioned in relation to the industry’s dynamic shift from developed markets to emerging markets, especially as its brand awareness in China is weaker than that of archrival Samsung Electronics Co, Lu said.
US MARKET
The Taiwanes/be firm’s market gains in the US are not enough to drive growth because of the deceleration of growth in the US market and a higher mix of prepaid smartphones in the US without operators’ subsidies, she added.
Moreover, HTC’s component sourcing strategy has been problematic, causing it to miss the best window of opportunity, despite having a well-received product, said Lu, who rated the stock “underweight,” with a target price of NT$199.

HTC One Android 4.2.2 with HTC Sense 5.1 aka HTC Sense 5.0?

There were quite a lot of rumours about upcoming HTC Sense and Android 4.2.2 update for HTC One and HTC Butterfly. All were expecting HTC Sense 5.1 to show up, but instead, the version of HTC UI in latest Android 4.2.2 update is still 5.0. However, it does have a lot of important changes. Let me introduce few of them.
1. % battery icon

Finally! The most popular modification in custom ROMs of all kind. Now you can enable it under Settings ---> Power ---> Show battery level.

2. Android EQS

HTC did a great job by incorporating Android native EQS. You can switch it by tapping on the EQS icon in the upper right corner of the notification menu.

3. Android Daydream

Another Android 4.2.2 feature included in latest HTC update.

4. Long press home button works as menu button.

It's been very popular modification in HTC One custom ROMs. Now it's by default added to Android 4.2.2 update as well.

5. Minor changes in the app drawer and dock

Now you can remove all the icons from the dock, which wasn't possible in HTC Sense 5.0 we had in Android 4.1.2. Also, after moving some particular icon to the dock, it won't be gone from the app drawer.

6. More new screenshots coming soon!

Blue HTC One to launch alongside red version

HTC is set to launch a blue-toned HTC One alongside a red version of its popular flagship phone in the coming months, Pocket-lint can confirm.
Talking to sources familiar with the matter, the new colour will sit alongside a bright red version of the device, press shots of which have already been doing the rounds online.
The two colours will join the black and silver versions already on sale.
We aren't sure what blue the HTC One will take, however we've mocked up a quick photo of what it could look like (above).
The red one first appeared online at the beginning of May on HTC's US website before being pulled. It later appeared on the website of Handtec, a UK online retailer, with a price tag of £503.99 for a 32GB version.
It's not the first time the company has created a coloured metal phone. Pocket-lint has personally seen a limited-edition (50) red version of the HTC Legend at the headquarters of One & Co, HTC's design house.
We've also had the One S with the special anodised finish and the ill-fated Purple Rhyme that was designed for "girls".
We think we've actually seen the red HTC One in the flesh at a recent HTC event being used by a HTC exec, but can't be sure.
Sadly, our secret squirrel doesn't have any date information on when we can expect to see the new blue and red versions of the HTC One.
We will keep you posted.

HTC's bolder marketing includes 'HTC One Showrooms' in high-traffic malls

HTC hopes to boost consumer awareness for its next-generation flagship handset with a new marketing campaign across malls in the US.

Focus Taiwan reports that starting 11 April, the company will roll out "HTC One Showrooms" to high-traffic malls across the US to put the HTC One in front of more people. In a pop-up store approach, the Showrooms will allow users to play with the One before making a purchase on either Sprint, AT&T, or T-Mobile.

Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington will have pop-up stores for a minimum of three months as HTC hopes to bring a great start to the HTC One.

"HTC One Showrooms are taking the concept of a pop-up store to a different place by creating a large, playful, interactive exhibit where we expect people to be entertained and have a new experience with the HTC One at each visit," said Erin McGee, VP of marketing for HTC in North America, in a statement to Focus Taiwan.

Available in Europe since March, the HTC One will be now be available on Sprint and AT&T beginning 19 April for $199 (£130).

The pop-up stores represent HTC's rethinking of its device marketing in 2013. It has not only dropped the "Quietly Brilliant" product tagline, but also wants to be louder in the way it markets devices to customers. This was evident in early March when the company took marketing to the streets of New York at the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4. It had a street team giving people waiting for the S4 event a preview of the HTC One, trying to distract from Samsung's hype.

HTC is taking a page out of Apple and Samsung's book with the mall tactic. Of course, Apple has a large number of retail stores in malls across the world where it pushes its devices, but Samsung has also been known to push devices through pop-up stores. It's a good idea, especially around the launch of a new product.

Beyond putting devices in people's hands, has HTC previously revealed it will also increase its digital marketing budget by 250 per cent in 2013 and traditional media marketing budget by 100 per cent.

We've reached out to HTC to see if there are any similar plans for the UK.

Will the HTC One act as the company's saving grace?

HTC to launch U.S. marketing tour for HTC One phone

HTC Corp. will soon launch a new marketing campaign for the HTC One across the United States in an attempt to boost consumer awareness of the Taiwanese smartphone vendor's new flagship device.

Starting on April 11, the "HTC One Showrooms" campaign will begin appearing in high-traffic malls across the U.S., with the showrooms to remain in the shopping centers for a minimum of three months, HTC said in a statement on April 5.

The campaign, to be held in eight major U.S. cities -- Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. -- will offer consumers the opportunity to see, hear and hold the new smartphone before it becomes available nationwide through conventional retail outlets.

"HTC One Showrooms are taking the concept of a pop-up store to a different place by creating a large, playful, interactive exhibit where we expect people to be entertained and have a new experience with the HTC One at each visit," said Erin McGee, vice president of marketing for HTC in North America.

"We've created a mobility-powered playground that is good for our consumers and for our retail partners as we send informed customers to their doors," he wrote in the statement.

Unveiled Feb. 19 in London and New York, the new HTC One sports a 4.7-inch display with full-HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a 1.7-gigahertz quad-core processor and a new "UltraPixel" camera that enables ultra-sharp photo shooting and video recording.

Customers were able to pre-order the HTC One online in the U.S. beginning on April 5 through carriers AT&T Inc. and Sprint and retailer Best Buy. The device will be available nationwide at the three companies' stores starting on April 19, and through T-Mobile later in the spring.

The new marketing campaign echoed HTC's announcement in late March that it will take a new approach in its upcoming advertising campaigns to reshape its brand image.

The Taoyuan-based company has been using "quietly brilliant" as its brand slogan since October 2009, but has decided to market its new HTC One flagship phone under the themes "bold," "authentic" and "playful."

The term "bold" means HTC will promote its new products' features more heavily, while "authentic" indicates that HTC will focus on its own innovations and will not copy others' ideas, said Ben Ho, chief marketing officer of HTC.

"Playful" means HTC will create more interesting features based on consumer demand, he said.

To strengthen communication with tech-savvy smartphone users, HTC plans to increase its marketing spending in digital media by 250 percent and in conventional media by 100 percent this year, Ho added.

HTC Posts Record-Low Profit After Latest Smartphone Delayed

HTC Corp. (2498) (2498), Taiwan’s largest smartphone maker, posted its lowest quarterly profit on record after the delay of its newest flagship phone caused revenue to miss the company’s target.
First-quarter net income plunged 98 percent to NT$85 million ($2.8 million), the sixth straight decline, according to data released by the Taoyuan, Taiwan-based company yesterday. The average of 19 analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg was for profit of NT$600 million.

HTC lost early momentum for its HTC One handset in February as a shortage of camera components forced it to delay shipments in key markets by as much as a month. Prospects for revenue to rebound this quarter may be limited as the new device becomes widely available less than a month before Samsung Electronics Co.’s new Galaxy S4, which goes on sale in the U.S. on April 26.
“These numbers show the production shortage really is that bad, and my sense is that it won’t get much better in the second quarter because many of those issues continue,” said Dennis Chan, an analyst at Yuanta Securities Co. in Taipei, who recommends selling the stock. “For smartphones, timing is everything and the delay means they lose that timing.”
First-quarter revenue fell 37 percent from a year earlier to NT$42.8 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. That’s less than the NT$54.7 billion average of 19 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.
Operating Profit
Operating profit, or income from its core business of making and selling mobile devices, fell 99 percent to NT$43 million. Operating margin was 0.1 percent, according to data compiled by Bloomberg, missing HTC’s forecast for 0.5 percent to 1 percent.
Chief Executive Officer Peter Chou is betting on HTC One to revive fortunes at a company that’s lost more than 70 percent of its market value since a peak two years ago. Only three of 33 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg recommend buying the stock, while 20 recommend selling it.
Delay in shipments of the HTC One was caused by less-than- expected manufacturing capacity for the device’s camera, Benjamin Ho, the company’s marketing chief, said March 25. Production volume for the components will continue to rise through to the end of April, Ho said at the time.
Facebook’s Home
Resolution of those production problems and Facebook Inc.’s introduction last week of HTC First, a handset which debuts its Home software that features the social networking site on the device’s home screen, provides an opportunity for revenue to climb this quarter.
Ho, who was appointed in January, said last month he plans to boost spending and refresh the brand, after its global market standing dropped.
