Finland is Nokia. Nokia is Finland. I’ve traveled to quite a few number
of countries this year, and the only place where I see Lumia phones is
this chunk of ice that I call home. According to the Finnish business
publication Taloussanomat,
who references data from IDC, Q1 2013 was the first quarter where
mobile phones from the South Korean handset maker Samsung outsold those
designed in Espoo. If that’s not alarming, I don’t know what is.
Breaking things down even further, roughly 587,000 were sold in Finland
during the first three months of the year, with 73% of them being
smartphones. Samsung took 36% of the phone market (both smart and dumb),
while Nokia dropped to 33%. Meanwhile, Apple has 14% of the market,
which is something I wouldn’t have expected given how many iPhones I see
in people’s hands around town, but then again Q1 isn’t when people
typically buy iPhones anyway. Everyone knows the next iPhone is just a
few short months away.
Mr. Elop: Can you please switch to Android now?
