Nokia Siemens Networks marks 15 years of commitment to TD technology

From driving standardization to establishing leading position in the industry

The year 2013 marks an exceptionally long history of Nokia Siemens Networks’ contribution to the standardization, harmonization and development of time division (TD) technology, starting from TD-SCDMA in China in 1998. Today, Nokia Siemens Networks is at the forefront of TD-LTE development and innovation with award-winning technology*.

Over the years, Nokia Siemens Networks and its parent companies have driven the standardization of different TD technologies from TD-SCDMA as a 3G technology to TD-LTE-Advanced as an ITU 4G standard. Nokia Siemens Networks is the only global vendor in China with more than 9 years of investment in TD-SCDMA and has full capability for supporting operators in seamless transition from TD-SCDMA to TD-LTE.

“We have long-term commitment to China, especially in the area of TD technology development and, specifically, TD-LTE where we have supported the standardization, system development and testing as well as the global market development”, said Markus Borchert, president of Greater China region at Nokia Siemens Networks. “Our leading global position in LTE, built on our strong technological capabilities, combined with our local service resources make us a strong partner for operators in China and globally.”

The continuing drive for innovation has given Nokia Siemens Networks a unique position in the industry to achieve a number of milestones as world’s first. In 2001, the first TD-SCDMA trial system was demonstrated in Beijing, and the first TD-SCDMA video call was made. In 2009, Nokia Siemens Networks was the first to showcase a TD-LTE femtocell demo, followed by the first 3GPP R8 compliant TD-LTE call and handover. In 2012, Nokia Siemens Networks reached a record-breaking speed of 1.6 Gbps over TD-LTE-Advanced. The customers of Nokia Siemens Networks are able to trust in the company’s innovative products based on long-term commitment to TD technology compliant with industry standards.

“Nokia Siemens Networks has been part of the development of TD technology for the last 15 years," said Rajeev Suri, chief executive officer at Nokia Siemens Networks. "We have played an instrumental role in both the development of the TD standard and its global deployment. Our TD-innovation continues, building on the many records that we already hold.”

On May 27, 2013, Rajeev Suri was a member of a small group of German top business leaders to meet the Prime Minister of China, Mr. Li Keqiang. This meeting underlines the excellent relationship and strong engagement Nokia Siemens Networks has with operators and organizations in China.

Today, at the heart of Nokia Siemens Networks’ industry-leading TD-LTE solution is the award-winning Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station. In 2011, the company was recognized with a China Information Industry award for innovation and leadership in TD-LTE, and in 2013, with the TD-LTE Market Development Award in GTI Summit. In February this year, Nokia Siemens Networks announced its latest innovation: the world’s first data traffic offloading between TD-LTE and FDD-LTE and FDD-TDD load balancing solution.
